Reflections on Creating a Website

Creating a website was actually pretty simple. However, finding a web-authoring site that allowed me to do what I wanted to with my site was difficult.  I downloaded two different programs, purchased one from a computer store, and then finally ended up using Microsoft Publisher. The problem with many programs is the amount of time required to learn how to use the programs. I spent hours playing around with programs and found myself getting frustrated with how much effort these programs took to do something simple.

After several trials with different programs, I created my entire website using Tripod’s site builder. However, I realized that to make my site visually appealing and move it beyond a basic website, I had to start over using Publisher.

Although Publisher has limitations, especially when uploading to a web-hosting service, I was familiar with Publisher and knew how to get around many of the problems. I also knew how to create hyperlinks, how to insert graphics and pictures where I liked, and to alter my navigation buttons to take the current page’s link off.

I knew that many web-hosting servers do not take Publisher files unless one is willing to download each individual file. However, I knew Tripod would download a zipped file and open it. I also discovered that in order to make the home page work, it had to be remained “index.htm” and had to be the second page, not the first.

Eventually, I plan on learning how to use FrontPage so that I will have an easier time dealing with many of the quirks of Publisher, or the lack of flexibility with many of the “free” web-builders.
